Romain de Tirtoff was born April 21st, 1892 in St Petersburg, Russia into a well to do family. Ballet sparked young Romain's love for costuming and at age 20 he traveled to Paris over the objections of his father, a Fleet Admiral, who wanted his son to carry on family tradition by becoming a marine officer. It was at this time that Erte was born; Romain taking the initials R and T of his name and using the French pronunciation of the letters to create his new name. Famous for his signature fashion designs, Erte also designed costumes for the stage, fabric, linens, furniture, and watches.
