Armistad Maupin was born May 13th. 1944 to a conservative Christian family living in Washington DC. The family moved to Chapel Hill, NC where Maupin grew up. Before becoming known as the author of Tales of the City, Maupin worked for WRAL TV which was managed by the then future Senator Jesse Helms. Maupin came out in 1974, the same year he began writing his well known series.
