Lauritz Melchior was born March 20th, 1890 in Copenhagen, Denmark. His debut singing performance as a baritone was in 1913, but by 1919 he had become a heldentenor, a voice perfect for Wagner operas. On a trip to England in 1920, author Hugh Walpole became his patron and lover. Their relationship lasted for six year till Walpole broke it off. Melchior then started a relationship with Emil Opffer, who was also involved with American poet Hart Crane. He married (twice) and emigrated to the US just before the beginning of World War II.
