Patrick White left, Manoly Lascaris right |
Patrick White was born May 28th, 1912 in the Knightsbridge section of London to an English mother and an Australian-English father. Within a few months the family relocated to Sydney, Australia. A love of theater and writing appeared early in White's life. Feeling the outsider in English boarding schools, White begged his parents to let him quit to become an actor, an idea that was refused though they compromised and allowed him to finish early if he returned home to Australia to work the land. White aquiesced and worked two years as as stockman and when had all he could handle White returned to England to study French and German literature at King's College in Cambridge. White developed an unrequited love for a fellow student whose ambition was to become an Anglican priest. While serving in the military during World War II, White met and fell in love with s Greek Army officer named Manoly Lascaris and they moved to a home in Castle Hill near Sydney to spend their lives together.
