Christine Jorgenson was born May 30th, 1926. Christine experienced gender dysphoria with her male body and identity as George William Jorgensen Jr. Growing up as a boy in the Bronx, she was subjected to bullying and would run from fist fights. After high school graduation, she was drafted into the Army. Jorgensen heard about sex reassignment surgery after her military service ended and began taking a female hormone of her own accord. Determined to realize her dream of becoming a woman, George planned to travel to Sweden where the only doctors performing this type of surgery were then located. A fateful stopover in Copehagen introduced her to Dr Christine Hamburger, with whom she started the process.
Christine's surgery and new life became a sensationalized media story on December 1st, 1952 when the New York Daily News announced "Ex-GI Becomes Blonde Beauty" and making the erroneous claim she had become the first sex change recipient.
